     38OpenNMS is an open source network monitoring system that actively polls and scans the ORBIT back-end.  It scans every IP address on the ORBIT network and creates a list of running services on each machine.  Once a service is discovered, OpenNMS will poll this service every few minutes and will log the service's availability and status.  This information is then dislpayed on a web portal which gives a graphical interpertation of the ORBIT network map with graph's for service availability.  It also acts as a service watchdog where alarms are raised if previously discovered services are in a non operational state.
