Augmented Reality - WINLAB Summer 2016
Introduction
Our mission is to create an augmented reality application using current virtual reality technologies. Virtual reality replaces our world with a digital one completely while augmented reality adds digital objects to our real world. At first glance, it may seem virtual reality is harder to achieve but this isn't so. Most of the devices that are capable of altered reality are only able to achieve virtual reality at an acceptable degree. The HoloLens, which is designed for augmented reality, is very expensive when compared to its virtual reality counter parts because of the external information about the user's environment it has to collect.
Our goal is to mount two wide angle cameras to the front of the Vive and feed the streams to the left and right eyes. The two cameras would allow for stereoscopic vision. We also want to be able to interact with the augmented reality objects using the Leap Motion Controller.
Hardware+Software Platform
We will be using the following components to build our AR Application:
- HTC Vive and Vive Lighthouse
- Leap Motion
- 2 Genius Wide Angle Webcams
- Custom built mounts
For the software, we'll be using the steamVR plugin for Unity3D and various assets from the Unity Asset Store.
